A complaint from the victim Mohammed Ali (40), an iron scrap dealer, who reportedly escaped after paying Rs 10 lakh to the abductors, was forwarded to Pallavaram police by the Chennai city police Commissionerate.
The complainant, on December 18, went to a restaurant on GST Road, Pallavaram around 8.30 pm.
He then instructed his driver Anthony to buy food and was sitting inside his SUV.
While Mohammed Ali was inside the vehicle, a group approached him and threatened him at knife point.
They then took the car to Valasarawalkam and demanded Rs 2 crore as ransom to release him. Mohammed Ali finally paid Rs 10 lakh to the kidnappers and escaped from the spot.
He later lodged a complaint with the city police commissioner, who forwarded it to the Pallavaram police.
A special police team was formed to crack the case and they later picked up Sayed Mohammed Ali alias Rafiq (54), a resident of 13th Main Road, Anna Nagar.
Police said the accused had been involved in such criminal activities. Police also recovered a portion of the money from the accused.
“There are three more accused, who assisted Rafiq in carrying out the abduction. They are absconding and we have launched a hunt for them,” Pallavaram assistant commissioner Vimalan told DTNext.
