Rounding off the efforts taken to combat the damage caused by Cyclone Vardah, Velumani said the fallen trees will be cleared by December 23. “The Corporation has deployed 19,411 employees along with 3,522 workers from other municipalities, who have been working day and night. Nearly, 803 lorries, 354 earth movers and 565 chainsaw machines have been pressed into action. Out of the 17,157 trees, 16,070 have been cleared. The workers also cleared the trees fallen on the premises of private households and apartment complexes,” he said.
Velumani said the quantum of work completed by the workers set a record. “Generally, Corporation workers deal with 5,000-5,500 tonnes of garbage collected per day. But from December 12 to 21, they have disposed 1,24,240 tonnes of waste. This is unprecedented and a record. We are doing our best and the remaining work will be completed by Friday,” the Minister added.
The fallen trees have been removed to the Corporation dumping yards. “Only the leaves will be considered as waste. Once the total clean-up has been done, we will estimate the quantity of wood generated. A tender will be released and the wood will be sold,” he concluded.
