It is said that Biji Gogoi (30) was checking for water shortage in the building complex when there was no power supply when he fell into the sump and died. A native of Assam, Gogoi was working in the godown of Chennai Silks and lived in a three-storey building in Ramnathan Nagar, which is used as accommodation for staff of Chennai Silks.

Nearly 400 staff members are said to be living in the building. Gogoi, who lived on the ground floor of the building, went to check the sump in the portico as there was no water in the taps. Since there was no power supply in the building at that time, Gogoi, who was allegedly in an inebriated state, fell into the sump, through a small opening. It is said that the 20-feet deep sump had just two feet of water at the time of the incident.

Later, other roommates who came out searching for him found him in the sump and brought him out. As Gogoi had no external injuries, they took him the room but found him to remain unconscious. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared brought-dead.

The victim is suspected to have died of internal injuries. His body was sent to Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital for post-mortem and handed over to Gogoi’s elder brother, who worked for another textile company in the city.
