Series of accidents claim three lives, leave five injured
A series of accidents at different locations in the city over the weekend claimed the lives of three persons and left five more injured.

In the first incident, two employees of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Siruseri were run over by a tipper lorry at Sholinganallur late on Saturday night. One of them died on the way to the hospital while the other died at the hospital. The victims were identified as Prasanna and Naveen, both aged 23 and residing at Medavakkam.
The duo were returning home after work when the mishap took place. Prasanna was riding the two-wheeler with Naveen as pillion. When they were near the Aavin Dairy at Sholinganallur, speeding sand-laden tipper lorry ran over them. “The two were rushed to a private hospital by their colleagues, who were following them on other bikes. However, Naveen died on the way while Prasanna died at the hospital,” police said.
Naveen is a native of Periyakulam in Theni while Naveen is from Coimbatore. They were staying in the city for work. The Guindy Traffic Investigation police registered a case arrested the lorry driver Arumugam (34) of Tirunelveli for rash and negligent driving. The bodies were sent to the Government Royapettah hospital for post-mortem. A police source said that the duo was not wearing helmets, but it would not have saved them as the lorry ran over them. Further inquiry is on.
Man crushed to death
In the second incident, a man, who was sleeping on the pavement at Vadapalani was run over by a car around midnight. The driver fled the spot after locking the car. The deceased, Baskaran (55), working for a catering service company, was sleeping on the pavement on Amman Koil Street in Vadapalini when the incident took place, said sources.
Baskaran was a resident of Parameshwari Colony in Vadapalani. His relatives were flower vendors. Baskaran and his relatives used to sleep on the pavement to begin work early, sources added. Baskaran is survived by wife and two children. The Pondy Bazzar Traffic Investigation police have registered a case and are conducting inquiries with other platform dwellers to identify the vehicle owner.
Five students hurt
In another incident, five students of a private college sustained minor injuries after their Benz car rammed into a series petty shops on the road side at Injambakkam and caught fire. The five were students of a private college in Sriperumbadur and were allegedly involved in rash driving. On information, Fire and Rescue Service personnel from Tiruvanmayur came to the spot and doused the blaze. “The mishap occurred while the students were taking a turn on Injambakkam main road. They rammed into two roadside shops damaging both the shops and the vehicle. The car caught fire soon after the students got out,” said a source from the Fire and Rescue department. All five were taken to a private hospital. The Neelanakarai police have registered a case and are investigating.
