Iron rods fall from lorry, kill man on bike
In a freak accident, a man riding a two-wheeler was killed after iron rods fell from a lorry and one of them pierced through his chest on Mount Road in the wee hours of Saturday.
Chennai
Ravi (45), a resident of Swamy Naicken Street in Chintadripet, was riding his two-wheeler from his house in Chintadripet to a private company in T Nagar where he worked for morning shift duty.
“The iron rod laden lorry was on the right side of Mount Road. Near Gymkhanna Club, the driver took a right turn and the iron rods tumbled out. The rods fell on Ravi and one pierced through his chest. The rods were not tied together due to which they easily fell out,” said a police source.
Passers-by called for an ambulance and rushed him to the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital, but were unable to save him. Ravi is survived by wife and two children.
The Anna Salai Traffic Investigation officials registered a case and arrested the lorry driver Pramod (45), who hails from Uttar Pradesh. Initial inquiries revealed that the iron rods were being transported from Mount Road to Teynampet for metro rail work.
In a separate incident, a man was killed after his bike rammed against a stationary lorry at Madhavaram Roundtana. Mahesh (33), was a resident of R P Nagar and worked in a tile factory. The lorry driver fled the spot. The body was sent to the Government Stanley Hospital for autopsy.
