    Corporation identifies sites in 15 zones to dump C&D waste

    Taking the first step towards putting a comprehensive plan in place to deal with the gargantuan amounts of construction and demolition (C&D) waste in the city, the Greater Chennai Corporation has earmarked designated spots in each of the 15 zones where the debris can be dumped.

    The dumping of C&D waste indiscriminately will attract a penalty, which will be effected by the assistant engineers. The designated areas are Sathangadu (Tiruvottiyur), CPCL junction (Manali), GNT Road Sembiam Sengundram Road (Madhavaram), Kodungaiyur (Tondiarpet), Moolakothalam crematorium (Royapuram), Otteri disposal yard (Thiru Vi Ka Nagar), Devi Karumariamman Nagar crematorium (Ambattur), 1st Avenue of Gajalakshmi Colony (Anna Nagar), Karaneeswarar Pagoda Street Recycling Plant (Teynampet), Anna Avenue (Kodambakkam), Ramavaram Bharathi Road (Valasaravakkam), MGR Nagar recycling plant (Alandur), Near Kotturpuram Railway Station (Adyar), Perungudi dumpyard (Perungudi) and Gangai Amman Koil Street Extension in Karapakkam (Sholinganallur). 

    DTNext had earlier reported that the Greater Chennai Corporation had sanctioned a detailed project report to IIT Madras to study the problem of C&D waste, which was being generated in large quantities, and devise an effective disposal mechanism. Currently, the debris is being dumped into lakes and marshlands, polluting the environment. A senior official from Greater Chennai Corporation said designating specific areas for C&D waste collection in each zone was a beginning towards creating a sustainable disposal mechanism.
