    Youth falls to death during brother’s birthday party

    The birthday party of his brother and two friends turned tragic for a youth after he suffered a fatal fall from the second floor in the wee hours on Sunday at a lodge on Peters Road in Royapettah.

    Pradeep Kumar (29), a resident of Ninth Street at Aziz Mulk in Thousand Lights, a construction site supervisor, died after he fell nearly 25 feet from the opening of a lift which was covered with an asbestos sheet. The lift was under construction from more than six months. Since it rained, the quality of the asbestos deteriorated and cracked, through which Pradeep fell and died of head injuries. 

    The victim was celebrating the birthdays of his brother Sathishkumar (31) and his childhood friends Suren and Shiva. Around 11 people had gathered in the room, Pradeep had booked for the party. After cutting the cake, the group proceeded to the terrace for drinking around 2.30 am. They were cracking jokes on each other when, taking offence to it, one of them walked away and Pradeep followed to call him back. However, on reaching the terrace extension, he stepped on the asbestos without noticing it and fell through it. Police said the men were in an inebriated condition. Pradeep was rushed to the Royapettah Government Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. His body was sent for a post-mortem and handed over to the family.

    In a separate incident, a man jumped to death from the seventh-floor of a building in Anna Salai, allegedly due to love failure. Ramadurai (24), of Redhills, jumped from the seventh floor of Shakthi Towers on Saturday noon. He died at the Government Royapettah Hospital early on Sunday. Ramadurai, was working for a company located on the Second floor of the building and had joined just eight months ago. On December 1 and 2, he called in sick and resumed duty only on December 3. His body was sent to the Government Royapettah Hospital for a post-mortem
