The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will be widening the Perungalathur-Puzhal bypass road, following complaints from commuters and the general public that the stretch was in pathetic condition despite the NHAI officials collecting toll.

The NHAI officials assured that they are in the process of inspecting the roads and have also floated a tender to carry out the widening works. Sources said the 32-km bypass road remains vital for Southern region as more number of mofussil and omni buses take this route to reach Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT). Trucks containers also use this route to reach Chennai ports. Despite the stretch having two toll plazas, the stretch remains a nightmare for motorists. “The officials must find
a solution as the route has become congested due to poor roads. The travel time has also increased. The road should be widened so that the vehicles can move freely,” says M Pandiyaraj, a private firm employee who often commuted through the stretch.
S Mohanram, a civic activist and president of Consumer Protection Council, Tirunindravur said, “The Chennai bypass six-lane road is of paramount importance. Earlier, trucks and containers were passing through the city and it led to traffic jams. To avoid this, the bypass road was later extended to Puzhal. The NHAI should expedited the repair and widening works.” When contacted, a senior official, NHAI, on condition of anonymity, admitted that the stretch was badly damaged. “We recently floated a tender to an agency in Delhi to carry out the widening work. Further, the agency will add one more layer on the existing roads. The works will start in a month.”
