Mohammed Hafiz (42), a builder and realtor,  had died at his residence on November 20. His wife Aneesha fathima (33) informed both families that the cause of death was a heart attack. The couple lived in Santham Colony in Thirumangalam with two children. However, Hafiz’s brother Adam Miyar Khan lodged a police complaint the same day saying that all was not well between the couple. On Friday, the post mortem report revealed that the cause of death was broken Hyoid bone in the neck.

Following this, the Thirumangalam police took Aneesha into custody and she confessed to the crime. Investigations revealed that the couple had been quarrelling for the past two years after Hafiz found out that Fathima was having an affair with her gym trainer Premkumar (29) of Korattur. Recently, Hafiz met Fathima’s parents and told them that he would divorce her as she continued her ties with Premkumar. Fathima’s parents advised her to part ways with Premkumar as she was better off with the wealthy Hafiz. This is when Fathima and Premkumar hatched the plan to eliminate Hafiz. As per the plan, on 20 November, Premkumar arrived at Fathima’s house around 3.30 am. A senior police officer said, “Fathima first assaulted Hafiz and he fell down fracturing his arm. She then stamped him on the neck killing him on the spot. After the murder, Premkumar left the house.”

In the morning, Fathima informed Khan that Hafiz was not waking up. They took Hafiz to a private hospital where he was declared brought dead. On suspicion, Khan lodged a complaint. The police registered a case under section 174 of IPC (suspicious death) and began an inquiry. They police began tracking Aneesha’s phone as part of the investigations. It is the second such incident in the city in four days.  A woman and her paramour were held for murdering her husband in Vadapalani on November 30.
