Greater Chennai Corporation, traffic cops devise joint plan for relief & rescue

In order to achieve seamless communication between the two organisations, the Chennai traffic police has posted a Corporation assistant engineer at its control room here so that the assistance of Corporation officials could be sought easily whenever needed. Similarly, a traffic sub inspector has been posted at the Corporation control room opened for rain relief works. 

“When police needs Corporation’s assistance to clear uprooted trees or any other works, the message is passed on to the control room and the assistant engineer will depute the respective personnel to assist the police. Our control room personnel may not know the correct point of contact and this actually reduces a lot of time to solve the problems,” a senior traffic official told DTNext. 

Corporation officials also make use of the traffic sub inspector posted at the Corporation control room to reach out to the concerned police personnel when they needed assistance for traffic diversion, control and regulation. Police said rain water accumulation on the sides of roads had been the major cause for traffic snarls in the city. “Motorists want to avoid the puddle and the entire traffic flow moves to the centre of the road. This slows down the flow of vehicles and creates traffic blocks,” the official added. Sources told DTNext that the corporation had not done anything major to clear the drains. Plastics and waste materials have blocked most of the drains causing flooding on the roads.
