A division bench comprising Justice M Jaichandran and Justice S Baskaran after perusing the status report and the submission that Madhan, presently in judicial custody, was traced and produced before the designated magistrate on November 20, dismissed the HCP as infructuous. The plea was moved six months ago, by Madhan’s mother Thangam, to rescue him as she feared threat to his life from his SRM bosses. However, the bench on responding to the 16 criminal original petitions filed by various students and parents seeking to recover the money they had given to Madhan for obtaining a medical seat in SRM, held that necessary orders in this regard would be passed by Thursday.

Setting aside the apprehension expressed by their counsel that police action in recovering the money was unsatisfactory, the bench orally observed that the investigation has just commenced and one must wait for the outcome before concluding. “But about the money, the petitioners have a guarantee that the amount has already been deposited by SRM founder T R Pachamuthu and hence the petitioners need not have any apprehension about their money,” the bench added. Madan had gone underground after collecting several crores of rupees from parents promising MBBS admissions for their children at a medical college run by SRM Group. He had left a note saying that he is going to end his life in Varanasi owing to differences that had emerged between him and Pachamuthu. The cheated students had moved criminal original petitions against Madhan.
