Smriti pays 100 to ‘foot’ her bill
It was a twin pleasant surprise for 39-year-old Ganesan, a cobbler running on the pavement near the Pateeswarar temple at Perur, on Saturday, as Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani came to him to get her footwear repaired and paid a Rs 100 note for the job.

Though Smriti Irani managed to avoid the media at the airport here on Saturday afternoon, she could not avoid being in the news as minutes later she was forced to stop her convoy to get her footwear repaired by a cobbler on the city outskirts.
The strap on one of the sandeals came off as the minister landed at the airport. Later, on the way to Isha Yoga Centre, she asked BJP leader Vanathi Srinivasan, to help her get the footwear stitched.
“I insisted buying a new pair, but she refused and looked for a cobbler for nearly 13 km. She stopped the vehicle on seeing the shop of P Ganesan on the roadside at Perur,” Vanathi Srinivasan said.
The minister sat on a stool and watched his work. He asked for Rs 10. But, Irani did not have a 10-rupee note and took Rs 100 from a person accompanying her and put it in his box.
“I treated her like any other customer. Only while leaving my shop someone told me she is a union minister,” Ganesan casually told reporters.
