Quoting an order dated 31-12-1989 issued by a committee, CMDA has said that the above date had been fixed as cut off beyond which no approval could be given for new layouts, said the association joint secretary D Christian Paul. “How can the CMDA limit such approvals, when Chennai have been expanded to the Greater Chennai Corporation measuring 426 sq km now from the earlier 174 sq km,” they asked.    “The expanded city includes 42 local bodies covering town panchayats and municipalities in adjacent Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts. Infrastructure facilities have been provided to these areas, but people were unable to avail these facilities and opt for owning their houses due to the above mentioned order,” the protesters added.  Association treasurer E. Harish said “whenever we meet officials we are always asked why we have not demanded that the norm be relaxed. But what everyone fails to understand is that with increasing population and increased area, there should be need based relaxation of norms.”
