Three kids get cochlear implants in Tiruchy GH
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital of KAPV Government Medical College had successfully conducted cochlear implant surgeries to three children under the CM’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme which is the first of its kind in Tiruchy GH, said the Dean Dr S Mary Lily.

Three children- Varshini (3) from Manapparai, Bhuvaneswari (4) from Kaduvetti in Thottiyam and Navaneedha Krishnan (6) of Manapparai were screened to have hearing impairment by birth and were recommended for surgery. The surgery was done by the eminent Cochlear Implant surgeon Dr S Mohan Kameswaran, Founder and Director of ENT Research Foundation Chennai with the assistance of Chief ENT doctor of the GH Dr S Palaniappan and his team, said the Dean.
“Each surgery costs Rs 8 lakh and the children would be going for a follow up in the GH with speech therapy and rehabilitation for one year. All these were done free of cost done under CM’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme and children between one and six who are screened mute would get benefited,” Collector S Palanisamy told the reporters. He asked parents to approach the Dean, district differently abled welfare officer or the Collectorate to benefit from the scheme. Stating that consanguineous marriages as the main cause for the neo natal muteness, Dr Kameshwaran stressed, this difficulty could be corrected with cochlear implant at the right time. He also stated that all facilities were available in the Tiruchy GH which would be used by the people of the district.
