Krishna water from Kandaleru reservoir reached Poondi reservoir on November 17. The Public Works Department (Water Resources Department) officials said the inflow was merely 25 cusecs and they expect an increase in flow in the coming days.

“Water from the reservoir is released to the Red Hills lake from where water is drawn for drinking purpose by the Metro Water. As the Kandaleru-Poondi canal is not dry, the flow is fast this time,” the engineer said. He added that they were also closely watching any illegal pumping of water along the canal and carrying out intermittent repair works in the reservoir. Another engineer said that AP may stop releasing water if Chennai region was getting good rainfalls. Going by the present scenario, the level of water in lakes like Chembarambakkam, Red Hills and Cholavaram is gradually declining. “The situation is just the opposite of last year. All the lakes look like small tanks. By this time last year, the level in the Chembarambakkam lake was increasing fast and the storage in the Poondi reservoir was also high,” said a PWD engineer.
