MDMK-VCK rift deepens with DMK, Congress participation in a meeting
The meeting organised by VCK against the Uniform Civil Code had only strained the People’ Welfare alliance further. Nothing seems to be working out between the VCK and MDMK and the alliance is gradually falling apart. In getting political rivals DMK and Congress to take part in the meeting the VCK had only got on the nerves of MDMK general secretary Vaiko.

Vaiko abstained from the meeting and deputed the deputy general secretary of MDMK ‘Mallai’ Sathya to the Dalit party’s meeting. In the function, VCK leader Thol Tirumavalavan had honoured state Congress president Su Thirunavukkarasar and DMK MP Kanimozhi. That the newfound bonhomie between the PWF constituent VCK and DMK was an irritant to Vaiko could be made out from his silence on the meeting this morning. When reporters egged him to respond to the meeting against Uniform Civil Code at the National Green Tribunal, Vaiko said that he would only talk about the case and nothing more.
Understandably, the two Left parties, played it safe by sending R Nallakannu (CPI) and former MLA Dilli Babu CPI (M) to the conference organised to fire volleys at their ideological rival BJP. CPI state secretary R Mutharasan even defended their strategy by arguing that Nallakannu was much senior to him. The DMK did its bit to annoy Vaiko by sending its representative even as the same VCK had boycotted its all-party meeting on Cauvery recently by citing political reasons.
Though the parties might argue that the conference had no political agenda and it was organised to advance public interest, precisely, oppose Uniform Civil Code, even a political greenhorn would comprehend the political undertone of the event considering that leaders of VCK and DMK-Congress alliance had shared dais in Tamil Nadu ahead of polls in two constituencies and a by-poll in the state. More so, the Dalit party is supporting Congress candidate at Nellithoppu in Puducherry much to the chagrin of other PWF parties, particularly the MDMK. The MDMK has been publicly expressing its displeasure on the move and also the CPI (M) wanted to filed its own candidate in the seat in Puducherry.
