Ex-DGP asks policemen to improve mindset
Policemen should have high ethical standards, a notch higher than the rest of the society, said ex-DGP Chaman Lal here at a function on Tuesday. He added that the present day policemen were yet to come out of the feudal mentality, which he termed as the ‘Lion and Mouse Syndrome.’

“That the ordinary people were still suffering at the hands of policemen across the country shows the prevalence of feudal mentality among the personnel. The police were still serving their masters and were letting down the masses,” he explained. Addressing a gathering of retired policemen at Madurai the former DGP claimed that the police were communally divided too. He quoted the happenings during the recent Jat protests in Haryana. “The sectarian attitude of police was a serious challenge to the society,” he warned. Stating that to be effective in policing, the policemen should take up the uniform as a calling, a chance to serve the masses, the former DGP said. “The mind-set of the policemen need to be reformed first and mere modernisation in their working style will not help the country much in the long run,” Chaman Lal said. The former DGP said that the officers cannot justify the present stagnation in the force by comparing it with the standards in the society.
