Centre’s Uniform Civil Code a missile aimed at minorities: VCK
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) held a multi-party conference condemning the union government’s move to implement Uniform Civil Code by bringing together various political parties in the state including the Congress and DMK.

At the meeting, a resolution was also passed condemning the BJP government’s move calling it anti-national and one directed against minorities with an intent to agitate them. “The debate on whether Uniform Civil Code was needed in India is not new and had been mooted even at the time of framing the Constitution. Even back then, the architect of our Constitution had categorically rejected it and clarified that public should not be forced to come under a common civil code and be allowed to accept or reject it. The move to bring marriage, divorce, property inheritance and adoption under a common civil code was rejected and Muslims and Christians were allowed to have personal laws. On November 23, 1948, Dr. Ambedkar had recorded his dissent for the move and said that nobody should be forced to follow the UCC,” the resolution stated.
Condemning the BJP for covering up their failure in governance by targeting minorities with a UCC, VCK chief Thirumavalavan said the move was against public sentiment. “The BJP is completely against minorities and it has changed Ambedkar’s constitutional principles. It is the time to oppose such move” he said. DMK leader and Rajyasabha MP Kanimozhi, TNCC chief Thirunavukkarasar and several other political leaders participated in the event and expressed their opposition to the move in TN. They urged the public to rise against the UCC and not succumb to the BJP government’s pressure tactics. Implementation of the UCC had been one of the key election manifestos of the BJP in the 2014 elections and the union government has sought public opinion on this issue stirring a raging nationwide debate with several minority groups coming out strongly against its implementation. Barring the BJP, all regional parties in the state as well as the Congress are united in their stand against implementation of the UCC.
