The never ending traffic chaos at Vadapalani junction since the start of the Metro rail work will ease soon as the flyover on both sides of the junction is expected to be finished by December.

Officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) which had undertaken the flyover works with the State Highways department said that they have completed the works on their part. The State Highways officials said that they would finish the remaining jobs soon and the flyover would be ready for public use next month. A CMRL official told DTNext that they had completed their works including placing girders and had communicated to the State Highways department. “Works are almost over and we have submitted the reports to the SH department,” the official said and added that the SH should decide on opening of flyover. A State Highways official said “CMRL have completed construction of concrete works including placing girders and pillars.
Our works are to connect to the ramps and work is on in full swing.” The flyover has been expected to be open in December, he added. Meanwhile, motorists, who faced immense inconvenience on the junction feel happy about the pace of the flyover works. “Whenever I reach this intersection, I will switch off my bike, because I know it will take around 20 minutes to cross the junction, which will be choked with traffic,” says V Suresh, a motorist, who takes this route frequently.
However, he expressed satisfaction, as the opening of flyover would reduce traffic congestion to a large extent. According to the Highways department officials, the government made a proposal to construct flyovers in both directions on Jawaharlal Nehru Road in 2005. However, the work began only in 2014, as Metro rail works were in progress and there was difficulty in getting clearance.
