High tide damages Dhanushkodi road

A new road for a distance of 9.5 km linking Dhanushkodi island was laid by the central government at a cost of Rs.50 crores to promote tourism. It is yet to be thrown open to the public. The sea was rough for the past several days near Dhanushkodi and Rameswaram. Fishermen were warned against venturing into the sea for fishing. On Sunday night, there was heavy storm and hightide near Dhanushkodi. The sand and boulders kept to support the road were thrown far by the sea. As a result, the road was damaged for a distance of 150 m.  Soon, the Highways Department were informed about nature’s fury. 

The officials immediately arranged a vehicle full of boulders. The boulders and sand bags were placed on the roads and work is going on in full swing presently. Local fishermen informed that high tides are common during this monsoon season. Highways Department officials should be more cautious, they said. More such damages are expected in the next few weeks and the Highways department should take precautionary measures to complete the road at the earliest, demanded fishermen.
