2 workers die of asphyxia in sump, 1 critical in Salem
Two construction workers died and another worker was battling for his life after the trio went to remove the scaffolding of an underground sump under construction in a house in Salem. They died of asphyxiation.

The deceased were identified as K. Raja (35) of Suramangalam, and P. Mani (37) of Karuppur in Salem. The lone survivor K Sathiyaraj (22) of Karuppur was battling for life. Police said that C. Srinivasan (38) a silver anklet shop owner from Narasothipatti was constructing a new house at Perumalgounder Kadu in Reddiyur, where over 10 construction workers including the trio was working. About three weeks ago the ground water sump was constructed and removal of the wooden logs supporting the concrete structure inside the sump began on Tuesday. Sathiyaraj first went into the sump to remove the wooden logs but in a few moments he raised an alarm and fell unconscious.Â
Hearing him Raja and Mani went inside to help him. Fellow workers said that the duo struggled to breath, and fainted. Shocked workers immediately informed the Fire and Rescue Services Department. The rescuers from Shevapet Fire Station and Alagapuram police rushed to the spot. Equipped with oxygen cylinders and breathing equipment the rescuers brought the trio out of the sump. By then Raja and Mani died.Â
Sathiyaraj was battling for his life and was rushed to the Salem Government Super Specialty Hospital. Doctors said that his condition was critical. Â Alagapuram police registered a case against building owner Srinivasan and the contractor A. Saravanan (30) of Mottur near Veeranam. Salem Corporation Commissioner KR Selvaraj conducted an inquiry. He told reporters that action will be taken against the owner if the required permissions were not obtained for the new house.
