Naming Captain as CM candidate, a mistake: Vaiko
In a candid admission, MDMK chief Vaiko said that the one of the biggest mistakes the People Welfare Front (PWF) committed was announcing DMDK chief Vijayakant as Chief Minister candidate in the 2016 Assembly election.

“We were determined in not announcing any CM candidate on behalf of the PWF during the Assembly election in May, but we were compelled to announce Vijayakant, who avoided an alliance with DMK,” Vaiko said, admitting that the decision taken by PWF was wrong.
Stating that the PWF was indebted to DMDK for aligning with the combine, the MDMK chief said that the DMK was ready to allocate the constituencies where the DMDK wanted to contest. “However, Vijayakant ignored the DMK and joined with us and that was the reason why we declared him as CM candidate,” he said.
During 2006 Assembly elections, senior functionaries of the party like L Ganesan, Gingee Ramachandran and Kannappan insisted not to forge an alliance with the DMK and heeding their suggestion we aligned with the AIADMK. But, the trio later joined the DMK, he recalled.
“I have been striving hard in the DMK for its success in all the elections for 29 years. But, I was conspired against and expelled at last from the party. However, some leaders supported me and we launched MDMK party,” the former MP said and added that the DMK even now was planning to destroy the MDMK.
Though his comments were against the DMK, it did not mean that he was supporting the AIADMK. Even during 2011 Assembly elections, the MDMK did not knock on the door of the AIADMK and the party boycotted the elections. R Mutharasan, state secretary, CPI said that “the decision to announce Vijayakant as CM candidate was a unanimous one in the PWF.” When asked about Vaiko’s admission that it was a wrong decision, the leader refused to comment on it.
