Harinivas, a resident of Janaki Nagar, Maduravoyal, who was showing symptoms of dengue underwent treatment at a hospital in the locality for four days. He was shifted to the Institute of Child Health on October 26. “He was brought here on the fifth day and eventually succumbed to the fever on Sunday. The phase between fourth and seventh day of dengue are very critical for children below 1 and above 10 years. The boy eventually had a multi organ failure,” said a source from the ICH.
However, the source denied reports of a 11-year-old girl from Pammal, succumbing to the disease, adding that it was a case of Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), an acute, major, life-threatening complication of diabetes. Over the past few weeks, there have been reports of children succumbing to dengue although public health officials claim most of the deaths are unrelated. A couple of weeks ago, three children—one from Maduravoyal and two from Pozhichalur had died of the disease at the hospital.
