Boozers Association nominee’s novel march to RO’s office
In a bid to highlight the ill-effects of liquor on the health of men in the state and the plight of women who lose their husband early to the problem, Boozers Welfare Association candidate in Thanjavur filed his nomination in a novel way. He wore around 10 mangalasutras (thalis) on his neck while filing his papers with the Returning Officer.

Around 11 am, the association candidate MS Arumugam (49) along with the president of the association P Chellapandian arrived at the taluk office here amusing everyone by wearing the mangalasutras to file the papers.
Initially police prevented them from going into the office with the threads around their neck. An argument ensued and the candidate said the women’s marital life has been short-lived as the men consume substandard liquor sold in the Tasmac outlets. “We are wearing the ‘thalis’ to highlight the plight of the women in the state who become widows early,” they added. Finding it futile to argue with them further, police let the candidate to file his nomination papers with the Returning Officer C Suresh in the way he walked in.
After filing his papers, Arumugam told the reporters, “Both ruling AIADMK and opposition DMK are strong in the state, while the ‘mangalyam’ of the poor women are weak and uncertain. The state gov-ernment has been raking in several crores of rupees through the Tasmac. For instance, in Thanjavur alone, the outlets made Rs 6 crore during the Deepavali weekend.”
He added, “Since the state is making money through the boozers, it must provide life insurance to them and ensure priority in employment to the widows of the boozers. The government must adopt the children orphaned by alcoholic parents.”
