The weatherman at Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said that the southern parts of the state would receive heavy rains while dark clouds would hover over Chennai providing considerable rainfall to some parts of the city.
Speaking to DTNext, S B Thambi, Deputy Director-General of Meteorology, RMC, confirmed the arrival of the northeast monsoon. “North-east monsoon rain has commenced over the South-Eastern Peninsular region with marginally less than expected activity. As far as rainfall is concerned, the southern districts will have lion’s share, while the sky will be overcast in Chennai for the next two days,” he said.
Thambi added that the low-pressure over southwest Bay of Bengal lies off the Tamil Nadu coast. “Another upper air cyclonic circulation is likely to move westwards and under its influence and if it does, a fresh low pressure area will form over southeast Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood around November 1,” the weatherman pointed out.
In the last 24 hours beginning from 8.30 am on Sunday, Tiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur district received heavy rainfall of 7 cm. Valangaiman, Perambalur and Thozhudur received rainfall of 6 cm, respectively, during the last 24 hours.
K Srikanth, a city-based weather blogger, Chennayil Oru Mazhaii Kaalam, says, “The delta region and central districts witnessed heavy rainfall on Saturday and southern districts will have good rainfall in the next few days. However, rainfall would be less in the fortnight of November and the state will see heavy rains in the end of November and first week of December.”
He added that another low-pressure was likely to form over southeast Bay of Bengal and if it forms in southern side, there would be good rainfall.
