Newborn stolen from Salem Government Hospital
A two-day-old infant was stolen from the maternity ward of the Salem government hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

Shevapet police have registered a case and are on the lookout for the person (suspected to be a woman) who escaped with the new-born boy.
The baby was born to Venkatesan and Indhu (23) of Rajapalayam in Neermullikuttai, Salem. Indhu was admitted to the GH on Saturday. Later, on Monday, she delivered of a baby boy through Caesarean section. Post-delivery, the mother and child were under doctor’s observation and her mother Lakshmi was attending to both of them.Â
On Wednesday afternoon Lakshmi had gone to wash the baby’s clothes. During the time, Indhu left the baby on the bed and went to the restroom. When Indhu returned after a few minutes, she was shocked to find the baby missing and informed the hospital staff. Police inquiries revealed that a few persons in the ward saw a woman walking out with the baby.
Police were collecting CCTV footage from the hospital and some nearby commercial establishments facing the road. Hospital dean Kanagaraj told reporters that the hospital would conduct a probe into the incident and initiate appropriate action against the staff concerned for negligence.Â
