Corporation geared up for water war
The Greater Chennai Corporation has identified 859 areas in the city that are prone to waterlogging and zeroed in on 306 localities that could face severe inundation.

Last year’s deluge, which caught the local body unawares, has led the officials to prepare for any eventuality this monsoon. Among the 7,351 storm water drains (1,884 km), 5,311 (1,244) structures have been desilted at a cost of Rs 18 crore. The Corporation oversees the 16 subways and has kept 38 super suction vehicles to pump out water in case of inundation. In 13 subways, walls have been built to check flooding.Â
In addition, the local body has also kept 42 rescue teams on standby, equipped with 103 motorised boards, set up 156 relief camps and four common kitchens. To deal with fallen trees, a huge problem during monsoons, 45 electric saws and two vehicles have been kept ready.Â
A three-member team has been formed to deal with calls related to threat from snakes. The Corporation has created three medical teams to handle any disease outbreak. As many as 3,337 conservancy workers would conduct malaria prevention exercises.
