According to airport sources, based on a tip off from intelligence sources at Madurai, the Tiruchy airport security stepped up scanning of the passengers. The AK-29, Air Asia flight arrived around midnight with over 160 passengers. It was thoroughly checked.
The DRI officials who were present in the airport while scanning found one passenger named S Marudhairaja (35) hailing from Sivaganga district was carrying 1.638 kg of gold in his electric torch and he was trying to sneak it through the security gates.Â
The DRI officials soon arrested Marudhairaja. The gold was in the form of bars and the bars were stuffed into the battery slot of the torch.Â
The weight of the torch while checking gave away eventually leading to the arrest. The arrest of the passenger led to the delay in the security area as all the baggage were kept open and checked thoroughly.Â
The DRI officials were probing whether any other fellow passengers were also involved in the smuggling. Only on Wednesday a total of 690 grams of gold was seized by the customs authorities in an Air India Express flight in the airport.
