Ever since the announcement of election dates by the Election Commission, the model code of conduct came into force throughout the district. District administration had announced that people who carry cash of Rs 50,000 or more must have supporting documents or else the cash will be seized.
Following that 18 static surveillance teams and same number of flying squads were appointed in Madurai district to monitor and curb the flow of cash. As the teams were in work they seized Rs 3 lakh cash for the first time at Tiruparakundram constituency on Saturday from a person coming from Nagercoil. In the close heels on Sunday, the officials seized Rs 94,000 at Thirunagar check post.
The businessman identified as Murugesan who is running a small factory in Kappalur was stopped by the static surveillance team on Sunday and found to be carrying Rs 94,000 without valid documents. The team seized the cash and handed it over to Jeeva, Returning Officer of Tiruparankundram constituency, who in turn deposited the money at Madurai South Treasury.
The election officials said that if proper documents were submitted for the cash, it would be returned to the concerned person.
