Police have found out that, these policemen had been sheilding the illegal business in the area and took the help of two vernacular media persons to threaten senior officials to ensure these policemen remained posted in Nungambakkam. It has been revealed that even a former senior most police official was with this nexus.

On Thursday, senior police officials transferred constable Rajaguru, of the Intelligence department, Nungambakkam and Charles, a constable attached to the Nungambakkam police station and kept them at the vacancy reserve in the Control Room after they were believed to have a role in safeguarding the interests of illegal gambling dens in Nungambakkam.

Additional Commissioner, Intelligence Section, had recently asked all inspectors to check such illegal centres in their regions and report to him in writing. These reports were then sent to the Commissioner of Police for suitable action. As a result, all the inspectors had been providing information pertaining to such centres under their jurisdiction and action had been taken against such centres.

However, when the IS Chief did not get any report from the Nungambakkam police, the CoP deputed a team from Triplicane to check on such centres. The team then raided three such centres in Nungambakkam in the last two days and found material evidence, establishing the role of the two cops. The matter was later reported to the Commissioner, seeking action against the constables.

Police had found out that these constables deliberately refrained from reporting the matter to the higher officials and even threatened other policemen in the Nungambakkam station, who attempted to expose the racket. Further investigations revealed that, two vernacular media persons had been working hand-in-glove with the racketeers and used their ‘influence’ in the police to keep the two cops posted at Nungambakkam. The media persons even took the help of a former senior most official to threaten other top officials who wanted to take action against the erring policemen.

“The illegal ways of policemen at Nungambakkam had already been reported to the higher officials. However, the racketeers managed to protect them and the official who reported the incident was targeted. Now the city police have got enough material to take action against the two cops,” a senior police official told DTNext.
