How could they keep a cow in the city, one may wonder. They are part of a growing tribe, thanks to a Blue Cross initiative to give people a chance to take care of an animal of their choice. Blue Cross’ effort has ensured that more and more cows, cats and dogs in their shelter get new families who adopt and visit them regularly.

A few months ago, Ganesh was driving down the highway when a goat came out of nowhere and was crushed under the vehicle’s wheels. Even days after the accident, the scene replayed in his head and he wanted redemption. “I called Blue Cross and enquired if I could adopt a few goats. I was then asked to come to the premises and have a look at the animals there. That’s when I saw a five-legged cow. Dawn William suggested that I could adopt her and I didn’t have to think twice before agreeing.

“We have named her Lakshmi, which is the sign of prosperity and good health. I pay Rs 3,500 every month that takes care of her food, treatment and other expenditures. Apart from that, I take my son once a month to Blue Cross to meet her.”

Even college students are doing their bit to adopt an animal in distress and even sacrificing their pocket money. Sukanya Balakumar, final-year student of Mohamed Sathak College, says, “Since I do not have much work in the final year, I had time. I decided to volunteer with Blue Cross. That’s when I met Luna, an extremely adorable cow. I decided to sponsor her. Right now, I give Rs 1,000 per month. Since I am a student, I save the cash from the pocket money I get. I will contribute Rs 2,500 every month once I start earning,” says Sukanya, who has encouraged her other friends to adopt too.

This initiative enables people to take care of animals they cannot take home.

“We have started this initiative for those who love animals but cannot keep them at home. They can drop into Blue Cross, take a tour and spend time with the animals there. If they connect with anyone, they can choose to sponsor. We have a range of animals. From white mice to cats and from pigeons to buffaloes, the animals are many and the challenges are much more in taking care of them. Those interested will be completely assisted by us,” says Dawn William of Blue Cross.
