The HC in its order stated that based on the complaint given by Dr Rani, a case was registered against M Paranjothi in 2011. When the matter was called on September 29 this year, petitioner as well as the respondent categorically made a statement that they have settled the dispute amicably.

They also filed a memo of compromise on September 28 duly signed by both the parties and counter signed by their respective counsels. Both the parties further assured that they were ready to donate Rs 75,000 to Harijan Seva Sangh in Madurai.

As per the orders, both the parties settled and appeared on October 4 and the judge K Kalyanasundaram, who heard the case, quashed all the charges levelled against Paranjothi. A copy was also sent to Judicial Magistrate court and inspector of police station at the GH.

It may be noted that Rani lodged a complaint with the Thillai Nagar police alleging that Paranjothi had grabbed money and other valuable properties from her on different occasions after their marriage that was held in Chennai in 2008.

She had approached the judicial magistrate court seeking a direction to the police to file an FIR against Paranjothi.

Based on the court direction, a case was registered against Paranjothi on December 16, 2011 (Crime No 247) under IPC sections 493 (cohabitation caused by a man deceitfully inducing a belief of lawful marriage) 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating), 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation), 294 (b) (uttering obscene words), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and certain sections of the Harassment of Women Act.

Paranjothi, who held several portfolios in the Tamil Nadu cabinet, was asked to step down after a case was registered against him.
