Though the government did not release details of the hour-long meeting, which started at 9.30 am at the Secretariat, it is understood to have discussed the deadlocked Cauvery issue, especially Modi regime’s stand to delay the constitution of Cauvery Management Board (CMB) despite the Supreme Court earlier passing an order to constitute the same in days.

The cabinet had also pondered over the report of the high-level expert committee, which, most opposition parties here have alleged, does not thoroughly reflected the crisis in Tamil Nadu owing to water shortage.

Also on its agenda was the two-day rail roko the state farmers and opposition parties had jointly organised in protest of the ruling BJP’s stand on CMB constitution issue.

The state government has issued orders appointing special officers to the village panchayats, panchayat union councils or district panchayats who will run them till the day the first meeting of the local bodies are held after conduct of elections or up to December 31, 2016. The order has been issued in vew of deferred civic polls.
