Irrigation department officials on Sunday said the release of water to Tamil Nadu, which was released as per the apex court directions so far, was now stopped due to alarming depletion in the KRS reservoir and the other dams upstream, since Saturday night.
Sources said water flow was stopped as good rains downstream of KRS was bringing good inflows into Tamil Nadu beyond Biligundlu in Krishnagiri district. Sources said authorities will provide detailed information on justifying the move before the Supreme Court during the hearing of the case on October 18, besides driving home the point that the Karnataka Government had complied with the Supreme Court order directing it to release 2,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu daily from October 6 to 17. The water levels in the Cauvery reservoirs continued to fall in the last two weeks.
The water level at KRS, with an inflow of 870 cusecs and an outflow of 238 cusecs, was 81.20 feet against an optimum level of 124.80 feet. It was 108.77 feet reported on this day last year, sources said.
