100 more small buses to boost connectivity in city
In yet another initiative to improve road transportation and to boost connectivity in the city, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is likely to introduce 100 more small buses soon.
Chennai
Transport corporation officials say the upcoming fleet is under production. With this, the number of small buses plying across the city and suburbs will go up to 400. According to officials, the government is keen to improve the transport network in the city to cater to the increasing needs of the city. The introduction of such small buses offered a big relief to residents in the interior parts of many localities. The small buses provide easy link to bus stands and railway stations nearby, especially in suburbs and many metro rail stations. Officials added that they have been receiving requests continuously from residents associations of several suburbs for small buses.
“Small buses will be introduced on more routes after proper inspection. Though a majority of the areas have been covered, some parts have been left out. But, MTC services are available in those areas. When small buses are introduced, the crowd in regular services may come down,” said an MTC official, on condition of anonymity.
“Gone are the days, when people living in suburbs and inner areas needed to walk up to the bus stands and railway station. However, things have undergone a big change, after launched of small bus services in October 2013,” says Viswanathan, convener of Chitlapakkam Residents Coordination Committee.
