    In a tragic incident that brought back memories of water tanker lorries running amok on city roads, three college students of a women’s college were run over by a tanker lorry in front of their college, here on Thursday.

    Three students of Chellammal Women’s College in Guindy were crushed to death on Thursday afternoon after a water tanker lorry mowed them down in front of their college on the arterial Anna Salai. At least four others, including a student of the same college, were also injured in the mishap. The deceased students have been identified as Chitra, Gayathri and Ayisha. While Chitra and Gayathri 

    were pursuing their second year degree in Commerce, Ayisha was pursuing her final year BCom. All the three women were on their way home when the accident took place.  Police said that the victims were waiting at the bus stop around 1.30 pm with a few others. 

    According to them, the lorry that was coming down a road overbridge at top speed went berserk after the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle. “The lorry first hit a two-wheeler and then an autorickshaw before running over the students. The vehicle then hit another motorist before ramming the road median and coming to a halt,” a police official said. The driver of the vehicle quickly jumped out of the of the vehicle and fled. Locals who were shocked at the sight of the gruesome accident immediately called 108 ambulance and rushed the victims to the Government Royapettah Hospital were Chitra, Gayathri and Ayisha were pronounced dead. Another evening college student Jayasree, on her way to attend classes also sustained grievous injuries and has been admitted at the hospital for treatment. All the other victims suffered minor injuries and were sent home after being treated as out-patients. The horrific accident stalled traffic on the busy Anna Salai as angry locals blocked the road resulting in a traffic jam. The Guindy Traffic Police are investigating.
