Workers too want safe Deepavali
Wishing a safe Deepavali is not just for general public, it is the wish of all cracker unit workers too to have an incident free season. With the heavy work load and the stretching of their means to meet the deadlines, they pray that there are no negligence and accidents at their workplace.

A cracker seller from Sivakasi, Muthu, said that workers in cracker units have no proper knowledge about the nature of chemicals used and when they misplace some of the chemicals or do not handle them properly it ends up in accidents.Â
Apart from that, cracker production is now being taken up as a household business and owing to it the chemicals and the cracker fuse are stored illegally in the houses which also increased the risk of accidents.Â
If the accidents need to be prevented, the workers need to be educated about the nature of chemicals used in crackers and about the adequate safety measures to be observed during the time of cracker production.Â
No cracker unit worker is ready to either educate the workers or to make adequate safety arrangements in the cracker units said Muthu. But the owners of the cracker unit said that the rules and regulations are designed only to facilitate officials.Â
A owner of cracker unit, on request of anonymity, said that workers who are packing chemicals in the crackers are not allowed to work after11 am in the morning and the cracker units are doing the best to safeguard the workers. All said and done accidents do occur, he added.
