Central team to survey Cauvery basin
A supervisory committee, led by Central Water Commission chairman G S Jha will lead a supervisory committee to the Cauvery basin area from October 7 to October 15 to assess “ground realities” as directed by the Supreme Court, a top official said here on Tuesday.

The team, which will also comprise CWC member Syed Masood Hussain, its chief engineer R K Gupta and chief engineer-rank representatives of the states, will visit the basin areas of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry before submitting its report to the Supreme Court on October 17. In Tamil Nadu, it is likely to inspect water stock at Mettur, Lower Bhavani Dam and Amaravati reservoirs in the basin.
“The team report will help the apex court arrive at a decision on quantum of water to be released by Karnataka to TN post October 18 when the matter will be heard next,” said officials.
Meanwhile, the Centre has issued a notification to states over formation of the committee. Earlier, the apex court asked Karnataka to release 2,000 cusecs Cauvery water per day to Tamil Nadu from October 7 to October 18.
Opposition to hold massive rally
Leaders cutting across party lines are planning to take part in an agitation, protesting the Centre’s stand on Cauvery Management Board (CMB) on Friday.
Delta farmers have also taken a strong stand and are planning an all-party meet a day earlier on October 6 here in order to claim their right to Cauvery water. Accusing the Centre of meting out step-motherly treatment to Tamil Nadu and alleging a tilt in favour of Karnataka where state elections are due next year, the farmers claimed they were “pushed to starve to death” by the Centre’s decision. Meanwhile, DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, who accused the Centre of changing its stance with poll-gains in mind, announced a day-long fast in the delta district of Thanjavur by his party on October 7. The constituent members of People’s Welfare front (PWF) including the MDMK, CPI, CPI (M) and VCK will stage a protest at Tiruvarur.
