ATM cash heist: Police suspect hand of a bigger gang
The hired vehicle driver, who escaped with Rs. 1.18 crore belonging to the Bank of Baroda on Monday, seemed to have had a comprehensive plan in place in what first appeared to be just another cash heist case.
Chennai
Police investigation has now confirmed that the heist was not an impulsive move by the driver. Police suspect that Esakimuthu has been planning this heist for some time and could have come to Chennai for this sole purpose.
Police found all the address provided by Esakimuthu false, even that of his native address in Thoothukudi. When a police team went to Thoothukudi, they found the address provided by him was false. Now, police even doubt that the name he had given could also be fake.
Esakimuthu, who works with a travel firm which is on contract with the Logicash agency, had given Saligramam as his residential address.
The police inspected more than 20 addresses in and around Saligramam area and could not find any trace of the place he had provided.
“We suspect that he had come with a proper plan and there could also be a major gang behind this heist,” a police official said.
Esakimuthu worked with the agency for more than three months and had been waiting for the right time to strike, say the police. Esakimuthu was picked up by another vehicle immediately after he abandoned his vehicle at Puliambedu, police said.
“The CCTV images that we’ve got are not very clear. We could see him abandoning the vehicle and getting out. There were some four or five vehicles moving at the same time and we really could not analyse which vehicle he had got into,” another police official said.
Meanwhile, police have identified some relatives of Esakimuthu and picked them up for questioning. Police have got some strong leads and a team has been sent to Tirunelveli after getting some lead.
