Ramkumar died on September 18, after allegedly biting a live wire at the Puzhal Prison where he was lodged in connection with the murder case of S Swathi, who was killed at the Nungambakkam Railway Station in June this year.

On Saturday, amid tight security around the hospital, the procedure was conducted by the five-member team of doctors — Dr Selvakumar professor, forensic science, Kilpauk Medical College, Dr Balasubramanian, professor, forensic medicine, Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital, Dr Manikandaraja, assistant professor, forensic science, KMC, Dr KV Vinod, assistant professor, forensic science, KMC and Dr Sudhir K Gupta, a forensic expert from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Talking to DTNext, Dr Narayan Babu, Dean, Kilpauk Medical College said, “The procedure which began at 11:15 am was completed by 2 pm. The body will be handed over to the family on Saturday. The report will be submitted to the court through the enquiry officer.”

Ramkumar’s father Paramasivam had filed a plea, seeking inclusion of a private doctor in the panel of experts. However, on Thursday, the Supreme Court dismissed the plea and allowed the inclusion of the expert from AIIMS.

Tension prevailed outside the Government Royapettah Hospital morgue as VCK cadres led by Thol Thirumavalavan accompanied Ramkumar’s father for the autopsy.

In the backdrop of sloganeering and minor tiffs with the police, the body of the deceased was taken to his native village in Tirunelveli later that evening in a private ambulance as the crowd gathered at the hospital were against transporting Ramkumar’s body in a police ambulance.
