    AIIMS doc to oversee Ramkumar’s autopsy

    The long-awaited postmortem of murder accused Ramkumar, who had allegedly committed suicide on September 18 at the Puzhal Central Prison by biting a live wire, will be conducted at the Government Royapettah Hospital on Saturday.

    The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the plea filed by his father seeking to include a private doctor of his choice during the autopsy. Fifth expert from AIIMS The family had moved the apex court after the High Court refused their plea and instead allowed inclusion of a forensic expert from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, as an additional member of the expert team that would perform the post-mortem. As per the High court order, Dr Sudhir K Gupta of AIIMS was scheduled to arrive in Chennai on Friday night. 

    The post-mortem will be done by a team of state government doctors that will include Dr S Selvakumar, professor, forensic science, Kilpauk Medical College (KMC), Dr Balasubramanian, professor, forensic medicine, Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital, Dr Manikandaraja, assistant professor, forensic Science, KMC and Dr K V Vinod, assistant professor, forensic science, KMC. The High Court, while allowing Ramkumar’s father to approach the Supreme court, said that the autopsy process should not be delayed beyond October 1.  Ramkumar allegedly committed suicide at Puzhal prison on September 18. Police said he bit a live wire at the dispensary block of the high risk ward in Puzhal prison. He died before reaching the Royapettah Government Hospital. He was under judicial custody in connection with the broad daylight killing of woman techie Swathi at the Nungambakkam Railway Station on June 24.
