Protest demands withdrawal of Draft National Education Policy
The Joint Action Committee Against Education Policy held a protest in the city against the negative aspects in the Centre's 'Draft National Education Policy — 2016', in which representatives from various political parties, besides other organisations participated. They said that there were several negative aspects in the draft policy and the Union Government should withdraw it.

Joint convenor of the Committee, PB Prince Gajendra Babu said that the 'Some Inputs for Draft National Education Policy – 2016' says that English will be the predominant language which could provide development for a child. He, however, added that the draft policy had been against marginalised and minority sections of the society.
Speaking at the protest, senior Congress leader Peter Alphonse said "the draft policy divides students after Class 10 into 2 sections — one that includes students good in English, Science and Maths who could continue their higher education in these streams, and those not good in these subjects who would be able to pursue higher education which will not involve these subjects. This is not right".
M Veerapandian from CPI said that union government should encourage neighbourhood schooling system and the draft NEP encourages privatisation. Dravida Kazhagam president K Veeramani and VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan also spoke at the protest.
