In a statement here, Anbalagan said the Medical Council of India (MCI) had increased the number of MBBS seats from 100 to 150 this year. Therefore PIMS should give an additional 18 seats under the government quota, he said. Chief Minister V Narayanasamy had announced that the government would get an additional 18 seats. However, these were not included in the final counselling for MBBS admission.
AIADMK was time and again charging that government is in support of private medical colleges and the present stance in the PIMS issue had proved it, he added. Hence, the government should take over PIMS. Till then power and water should not be provided to the college, he said.Â
Meanwhile, chaos prevailed in the final counselling for Biology-based courses at the office of the Centralized Admission Committee (CENTAC) at the government Engineering College here today. Students and parents resorted to a road blockade on ECR.Â
As many as 4300 candidates were invited for the counselling to fill 23 MBBS seats and 72 BDS seats by CENTAC.Â
CENTAC Deputy Convenor Pazhaniraja gave away the admission letters. Those who failed to secure a seat staged a road-roko along with their parents to protest the non-inclusion of 18 seats at PIMS for counselling citing a court case.Â
Police held talks and tried to pacify the agitators. But it resulted in an altercation which disrupted traffic on the ECR for half an hour. The agitators later dispersed.
