Vacation trip to grandparents’ house turns fatal for seven-year-old
A happy ride with her father to start a vacation with her grandparents ended in tragedy for Vichitra on Monday morning when a pick-up truck hit the two-wheeler, killing her.

Seven-year old Vichitra, a Class 2 student at a private school at Kumaran Nagar, Mettukuppam, was on her way to her grandparents’ house in Chengalpattu, along with her father Tirumalai (32) and younger brother Deepak (4). They started their journey early in the morning, as Tirumalai had to report for duty at his work place after dropping the children. Tirumalai works as a lorry driver and resides in Kumaran Nagar with his wife Priya and three children.
When they reached near Karapakkam around 5.45 am on Monday, a pickup truck which was coming to the city carrying water cans hit the motorbike of Tirumalai, throwing him and the kids on the road. Vichitra’s head hit the tarred surface and she suffered very serious injuries. The truck did not stop after hitting the two- wheeler. Traffic police and other motorists rushed the critically injured Vichitra to a private hospital in Perumbakkam. However, she died without responding to treatment within half an hour of admission.
Guindy traffic polce officials who are investigating the case told DTNext the injuries of Tirumalai and Deepak were not serious. Police arrested Perumal (23), who drove the truck, after identifying the vehicle from footage from a private CCTV camera. He was later produced before a local court and remanded in judicial custody.
