Tamil Nadu hopes to get Krishna Water
Due to heavy rainfall and floods in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu Public Works Department (Water Resources Department) expects to receive water from AP as the Kandaleru reservoir is fast filling up.

According to the PWD officials, Krishna water should be released from Kandaleru in two spells every year and the Poondi reservoir would receive Krishna water. As per the pact, the first spell is between January and April and the second is between July and September. Officials added that they had earlier communicated the AP irrigation department about release of Krishna water but the officials had neither released the water nor replied.
“Due to heavy rains in Andhra Pradesh we are hopeful that the AP irrigation department will release Krishna water soon,” said a senior engineer (Krishna Water Project, Division-I). He added that they had continuously been in touch with their counterpart regarding this issue.
“Poondi reservoir has enough space to store water and excess water can be diverted to Chembarambakkam lake. If the officials do not release water, we may have to make a request again,” said M. Bhakthavachalam, Superintending Engineer, Palar Basin Circle, Chennai Region.
Meanwhile, Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) assure that there would be no drinking water scarcity in the city. “As of now, lakes in the metro lakes have two tmc of water, which is enough for two months. If we receive Krishna water, it will help mitigate water scarcity,” said an official from CMWSSB.
