Doctor escapes molest bid in cab
The safety of working women who hire cabs during night hours has come into sharp focus. A 26-year-old woman doctor, who booked a call taxi from Injambakkam to go to an Ambattur hospital to attend night duty, had a miraculous escape when two unknown persons known to the driver, forcibly entered the car near Peace Temple and allegedly tried to sexually assault her, late on Sunday night.

Cab driver Venkatesh (24), a resident of Kottivakkam had picked up the doctor from her residence at Injambakkam and when the cab neared Peace Temple in the same locality, two more persons got in without her permission.
When the doctor protested the unauthorised entry of the two persons, Venkatesh told her that they were his friends and would get down on the way.
Soon, the two friends allegedly tried to misbehave with the doctor and she cried for help. Sources said a motorist driving behind the car, responded to the cries for help, chased the vehicle and managed to block the car near Neelangarai. Even as the car stopped, the two persons, later identified as Shakthi and Muthupandi, and residents of Kottivakkam, fled the spot. Venkatesh was apprehended and handed over to police. All three have been arrested and remanded in custody.
Neelangarai police, however, are trying to downplay the case and refused to divulge details about the complainant. They confirmed that the doctor got out of the car before the trio could harm her.
When contacted, JCP(South) TS Anbu gave a different version of the whole incident. He said the accused had tried to get into the car at Neelangarai and the doctor got out of the vehicle even as the two tried to sit by her side. “She called her friend and came to the police station to register a complaint,” Anbu said.
