Maduravoyal gasps without UGD system
At a time, when the civic body elections are round the corner, many localities coming under the Greater Chennai Corporation officials (GCC) limits struggle without proper civic facilities.

A case in point is Maduravoyal, which lacks a proper underground drainage system for long. Residents lament that despite repeated petitions, no steps have been initiated to undertake the UGD works so far.
According to residents, areas like Mettukuppam, Thasari Padma Nagar, Pallavan Nagar, PTC Officers’ Colony and Rukmani Nagar falling under 146th ward of the Corporation do not have UGD system. They also lamented that at present the sewage was being let into open space and it poses severe health hazards to them.
B Varadharajan, social worker and president, Maduravoyal Residents’ Welfare Federation, told DTNext “we have resorted to all kinds of activities, including protests and submitting petitions from zonal official to Prime Minister’s office. All our efforts went in vain. Officials just stop with giving assurances, but nothing has moved till date.”
Thirumal Adimai, another resident, says, “Ever since the Maduravoyal municipality merged with the Corporation, we are facing a lot of issues. Still many households in the areas are yet to get Metro water connection. Officials concerned turn a deaf ear to our repeated demands.” Speaking to this paper, E Jeevanandhan, councillor, GCC, 146th ward said that when he was the municipality chairman, the UGD works started.
“As of now, the works are underway and will be completed soon. As far as Metro water is concerned, 70 per cent of works have been completed and remaining works will be over soon,” he said.
An official from CMWSSB said “Once works are over, sewage will be pumped into Koyambedu treatment plant.”
