    Candidates contesting in the ensuing local body elections can breathe easy with the state election commission (SEC) raising the upper limit for poll expenses by a minimum of 40%.

    Expenditure for the 2011 elections for the posts of district panchayat ward members, panchayat union ward councilors, village panchayat presidents and village panchayat ward members was pegged at Rs.1,12,500, Rs,56,250, Rs.22, 500 and Rs.5, 625 respectively. 

    However, the new rates for 2016 for the same posts are Rs.1.70,000, Rs.85,000, Rs.34, 000 and Rs.9,000 respectively. Increasing costs have ensured that candidates have to spend heavily to ensure a win. Sources said that several candidates have already started searching for good auditors.
