Ramkumar’s father may move SC over autopsy plea

The delay over the postmortem of P Ramkumar, the sole accused in the murder of a woman techie, who allegedly committed suicide on Sept 18 at the Puzhal jail, is likely to continue as his father is set to move the Supreme Court seeking to appoint one of the doctors of his choice to be included in the post-mortem team to ensure transparency since it was a custodial death.

High drama prevailed at the court on Friday, when senior advocate Sankarasubbu, appearing on behalf of Ramkumar’s father made a mention before Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul about the third judge also favouring the appointment of a government doctor and hence sought to post the matter before a full bench. The advocate also claimed that all the three out of the four High Court judges had misinterpreted the Supreme Court observation in this regard.

However, the Chief Justice on ruling out the scope for the creation of full bench to hear this case, directed them to approach the Supreme Court as they feel that the top court order in this regard had been misinterpreted. Subsequently, the battery of lawyers immediately moved to the second bench comprising justices Huluvadi G Ramesh and S Vaidyanathan, who had delivered a dissenting verdict and sought to stay the post-mortem until the Supreme Court decided on their plea.

Sankarasubbu pointed out that though the post-mortem was directed to be held on or before September 27, they could approach the Supreme Court only on Monday (September 26) and hence sought to stay the post-mortem until they are heard. But even as the bench decided to hear the issue and pass orders, it was clarified that the third judge Justice Kirbukaran who had fixed the post-mortem date alone can deal with the issue. The matter  was taken up before him in his chamber.
