Sasikumar, district spokesperson of the organisation, was returning home in Subramaniampalayam, on the outskirts of the city, on a two-wheeler when the unidentified assailants chased him on motorcycles and attacked him with sickles. He was rushed to a private hospital, where he died, police said. Hindu Munnani has called for a state-wide bandh on today to protest against the killing of Sasikumar. Tension prevailed in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts as the news about the murder spread. Shops and commercial establishments were closed in both the cities, and buses remained off the road since morning.  A group of men pelted stones at the buses parked on the road side and broke window screens.

A police jeep was completed burnt in Thudiyalur, police said. A large number of police were deployed on the premises of the Government Hospital here, where the post-mortem examination of Sasikumar’s body was being carried out. Six special police teams have been formed to nab the culprits.  Some schools in the city declared holiday in view of the tense situation.

Meanwhile, Muslim organisations approached the Collector seeking intervention of the district administration and the police to put an end to the violence by Hindu outfits. They also submitted a petition to the city Police Commissioner A Amalraj. Meanwhile, leaders of various organisations and associations began to circulate messages on social media appealing for calm in a city that took a long time to recover from the 1997-98 riots.
